James Warlow - Architectural Technologist

With a career now spanning 47 years in architecture. My career started back in 1975 gaining a City & Guilds Certificate in Building (lovingly known as G*) progressing on to gain both ONC and HNC Distinctions in Building Technology as well as 'A' levels in Land Surveying and Architectural Technology. Following this I then completing 2 years of BSc in Building but unfortunately due to moving home I was unable to complete the final year. I have considerable experience in many varying areas of the building industry, from small scale domestic to multi-million pound projects with an enviable reputation for meticulous attention to detail. I enjoy solving construction details others don't, especially designing out potential defects for building longevity – this proved very useful when I took on some part-time lecturing at Norwich City College teaching Design Technology on the HNC Building Course. The size of a project doesn't worry me and I'll happily fit into the design team at whatever level required be it residential or commercial.

I am also a highly regarded specialist in designing and detailing timber and glass buildings which I have worked on all over the world since the mid 1980's. Having been brought up around old Messenger greenhouses my real passion for Victorian conservatories and orangeries emanates from a company I worked for, who were regarded as the most prestigious in the world as well as the most expensive! During my time there I travelled extensively throughout Europe and the USA surveying and detailing these buildings using all traditional Victorian details whilst incorporating modern technology. More recently I have also dabbled in contemporary aluminium wintergardens - interesting buildings.

When not working I enjoy gardening and the great outdoors with my wife and our trusty lab. My real pleasure though are mountains & wild countryside, so holidays are nearly always in the Scottish Highlands and Islands – even my labrador is named after my favourite Scottish Isle - Skye. In the past I spent nearly 50 years volunteering as a first aider/trainer and youth/adventure officer in St John Ambulance before moving house to the countryside. But now when I can, I support the East Anglian Air Ambulance and successfully raised £1,000 in 2021 taking part in their 24 mile trek around North Norfolk coast.

People have described me as being very laid back in my approach, don't be put off though as I'm probably thinking, but this has enabled me to communicate at all levels whether it be a titled client or business owner or the site labourer or the general public.
